Band of bandits headed by Baji is stealing crops from good people of Hidden Leaf Village. Hideout of these bandits is a natural fortification deep inside a cavern that fans out like ant's nest. Headman's daughter has been kidnapped and is being held as hostage in this fortress. Team 10 is ordered to rescue this hostage.
The purpose of this mission is to rescue hostages. Shikamaru is genin but a skilled tactician as well. Shikamaru suggests bypassing of the forts. Traps will be laid there, defenses may be strong there, but this is the best way to avoid having to fight the enemy. Shikamaru refuses to take Naruto along. He needs to infiltrate the enemy lines with ninjas capable of going undetected. Asuma and Kakashi sensei will go in while Shikamaru, Sakura, Sasuke, Ino, Choji and Naruto will remain outside the hideout. Shikamaru explains that hostages are hidden in three forts and beyond them there is inner fortress. Shikamaru and Naruto notice that Tofu is missing and soon they see him tied up and walking with three other bandits towards the fortress. Tofu was presented to Baji as deserter. It soon turns out that Tofu is a valuable informant as he explains that Hidden Leaf sent out three jonin and six genin to infiltrate the fortress. Tofu also suggest to take these six genin now when jonins are not with them.
Shikamaru is one step ahead of Baji when he foresees Baji's next move of hostage exchange. Baji attempts to exchange Tofu for Shikamaru but Shikamaru has been suspicious of Tofu as he secretly placed a mini wireless on him. That's how Shikamaru found out the password that would grant them access through forts. In this exchange Ino used Mind Transfer Jutsu to see through Shikamaru's eyes where the hostage was reading Tofu's mind.
Sasuke soon executes Fire Ball Jutsu, Naruto pulls his Shadow Clone Jutsu to make enemies feel like they have been attached by thousand ninjas. Choji uses Expansion Jutsu and human boulder to burst their way in to west tower and surprise Baji. Baji seeing the inevitable loss takes off his jacket to show his paper bomb. All goes well as always and Headman's daughter was saved.
