Sai is an artist. When Sakura asks him what title he would use for his new drawing, he simply says that he cannot name it as he has no feelings. Naruto, probably feeling jealous, spits out "Your drawing... nothing special". Sai responds coolly "much like your equipment". This sets off Naruto on edge.
Sai walks around the Hidden Leaf Village examining the carnage Pain left behind when he attacked the village in an attempt to capture Nine Tails and take control of the world. Naruto saved the village from Nagato's wraith but the destruction was apparent. Sai walking through rubble notices a little girl looking for her doll. Sai warns her that the rubble may cave in and hurt her.
Finding a treasure, wild flower growing in the midst of all the rubble, Sai sits down to paint. Kids demanded that he shows them his paintings. He tried to explain that his paintings are not for show and demonstrated one of his tricks making cat, rabbit and a squirrel. Kids started fighting over ripped pants and Sai was reminded of Sakura and Naruto. Sakura once punched him because he said that he didn't much care for Naruto. One if the kids ask Sai who Naruto and Sakura were to him and Sai answered comrades. Don't you mean friends? Here Sai began thinking about the friendship that Sasuke and Naruto have.
Remembering talking to Sakura, telling her about a curse mark... Sasuke being the source of Naruto's agony. Sakura having feelings for Naruto set out to kill Sasuke to unburden Naruto from responsibility to save Sasuke. Where would Sai stand in all this if he was a true friend? Is he?
Naruto picked a fight with Sai once. It was brief as Naruto cloned himself to Yamato to stop it. Naruto explained to Sai that the reason why he wanted to fight him was to learn how he fights as this would increase their team's chances if they were attacked. It's a buddy system. Naruto then suggested for Sai to learn how to make a better use of Naruto's strength.
Sai felt that Naruto was deeply committed to getting Sasuke back. Even when no one supported Sasuke any longer, when all hopes were lost for their friendship Naruto's believe remained untethered. Sai understood how important it is to have faith in people. Sai knows that there is an unbreakable bond between Sakura, Sasuke and Naruto. Sai hopes to one day also have such bond.
In next episode of Naruto Shippuden episode 239 we'll get to see Kosuke, the eternal genin again. The title of this episode coming out next Thursday December 8th is "The Legendary Ino-Shika-Cho".
